That night, we put our plan into action. At 2 a.m., when the hostel was quiet, Damien and Dave removed the camera from Carolâs office, while I stood watch outside the breakfast room. With the camera gone from Carolâs office, there was no way of proving that Dave had ever put it there.
In the morning, the three of us met outside Garyâs office at 10 a.m. Damien knocked on the door.
âCome in,â Gary called.
Damien opened the door, and Dave and I followed him inside. Garyâs office was pleasant, if disorganized. Potted plants crowded the windowsills, and his large wooden desk was buried in paper. One wall held bookcases and a large-screen TV.
Gary nodded to each of us. âWhat can I do for you guys?â
Iâd only spoken to Gary once or twice, and heâd struck me as an aging hippie, what with his graying ponytail, full beard, and gentle voice. Not for the first time, I wondered if he was capable of firing anyone.
âA video has come into our possession,â Damien said. âWeâve brought it to you because it contains information that you need to know about.â
Gary furrowed his brow. âWhy are you being so cryptic?â
âWhen you see the video, youâll understand.â
âSo letâs see it.â
Dave stepped over to the TV, inserted the thumb drive that contained the video, and then picked up the remote and pressed a series of buttons.
As the video played, I watched Garyâs expression shift from puzzlement to shock. When the screen went dark, he looked at Dave. âThis video is clearly from a camera placed in Carolâs office. Who recorded this, and why?â
âThatâs not important,â Damien said. âWhat is important is that Carol took a bribe to fire Mia. So far, only the four of us in this room know of the videoâs existence, and weâre willing to keep it that way, provided that you take immediate action.â
Gary looked at me. âMiaâwhat Carol did to you was wrong. I apologize for what happened, and Iâm more than happy to offer you your job back. Is that what you want?â
âYes,â I said. âI like working here, and I appreciate that youâre willing to give me my job back. But Carol canât be allowed to get away with this. Iâm not the first person sheâs mistreated, and I wonât be the last if you allow her to stay in her job. Carol has to go.â
Gary slumped in his chair. âBelieve me, now that I know what sheâs done, I want that woman out of my business. But youâve shown me a video that was recorded without my knowledge, let alone Carolâs. I canât use that video to fire herâshe could sue me for invasion of privacy, and sheâd likely win.â
âThen fire her for something else,â Dave said. âCarolâs also a thief. She steals food from the hostel and brings it home on a daily basis.â
âShe does what?â
âWe all know about it,â Dave said. âEveryoneâs seen it.â
âWhy didnât you tell me this sooner?â
âCarolâs worked here much longer than any of us.
