That night, we put our plan into action. At 2 a.m., when the hostel was quiet, Damien and Dave removed the camera from Carol’s office, while I stood watch outside the breakfast room. With the camera gone from Carol’s office, there was no way of proving that Dave had ever put it there.

In the morning, the three of us met outside Gary’s office at 10 a.m. Damien knocked on the door.

“Come in,” Gary called.

Damien opened the door, and Dave and I followed him inside. Gary’s office was pleasant, if disorganized. Potted plants crowded the windowsills, and his large wooden desk was buried in paper. One wall held bookcases and a large-screen TV.

Gary nodded to each of us. “What can I do for you guys?”

I’d only spoken to Gary once or twice, and he’d struck me as an aging hippie, what with his graying ponytail, full beard, and gentle voice. Not for the first time, I wondered if he was capable of firing anyone.

“A video has come into our possession,” Damien said. “We’ve brought it to you because it contains information that you need to know about.”

Gary furrowed his brow. “Why are you being so cryptic?”

“When you see the video, you’ll understand.”

“So let’s see it.”

Dave stepped over to the TV, inserted the thumb drive that contained the video, and then picked up the remote and pressed a series of buttons.

As the video played, I watched Gary’s expression shift from puzzlement to shock. When the screen went dark, he looked at Dave. “This video is clearly from a camera placed in Carol’s office. Who recorded this, and why?”

“That’s not important,” Damien said. “What is important is that Carol took a bribe to fire Mia. So far, only the four of us in this room know of the video’s existence, and we’re willing to keep it that way, provided that you take immediate action.”

Gary looked at me. “Mia—what Carol did to you was wrong. I apologize for what happened, and I’m more than happy to offer you your job back. Is that what you want?”

“Yes,” I said. “I like working here, and I appreciate that you’re willing to give me my job back. But Carol can’t be allowed to get away with this. I’m not the first person she’s mistreated, and I won’t be the last if you allow her to stay in her job. Carol has to go.”

Gary slumped in his chair. “Believe me, now that I know what she’s done, I want that woman out of my business. But you’ve shown me a video that was recorded without my knowledge, let alone Carol’s. I can’t use that video to fire her—she could sue me for invasion of privacy, and she’d likely win.”

“Then fire her for something else,” Dave said. “Carol’s also a thief. She steals food from the hostel and brings it home on a daily basis.”

“She does what?”

“We all know about it,” Dave said. “Everyone’s seen it.”

“Why didn’t you tell me this sooner?”

“Carol’s worked here much longer than any of us.
